Physical education develops children’s physical abilities and confidence. It provides opportunities for both co-operation and competition. Physical education gives children opportunities for creativity and challenge, both as individuals and as members of a team. Children learn how to plan, perform and evaluate actions, ideas and performances to improve their quality and effectiveness.

Physical education promotes positive attitudes towards active and healthy lifestyles and encourages life-long involvement with physical activities.

Physical Education at Key Stage I

Children build on their natural enthusiasm for movement and physical activity, using it to explore and learn about the world and their own capacities. They start to work co-operatively with other children. By watching, listening and experimenting, children develop their skills in movement and co-ordination and enjoy expressing and testing themselves in a variety of situations.

Physical Education at Key Stage 2

Children enjoy being active and using their creativity and imagination in physical challenges. They learn new skills, find out how to use them in different ways and link them to make sequences of movement. They enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They develop an understanding of how to succeed in different activities and learn how to evaluate and improve their skills. Outdoor and adventure activities are included in the curriculum.
