Physical Education at the British International Primary School
At our school physical education (PE) is taught by a specialist teacher. The focus is on developing children’s physical skills and promoting active participation, enjoyment and team spirit. PE is taught in the school’s gymnasium and, weather permitting, in the school’s grounds and local sports fields.
All classes in Key Stages 1 and 2 are timetabled for PE twice a week. In addition, from Year 2 all classes have a weekly swimming lesson for half of the year, taught by specialist swimming teachers, at a local pool. As part of the outdoor and adventure programme in Key Stage 2, children in Years 5 and 6 have an annual day trip skiing, and children in Year 6 spend four days on a cycling and multi-activity trip on the island of Gotland.
Children have opportunities to apply their physical skills, knowledge and understanding linked to a variety of IPC topics.
PE is linked to the House system, with a number of events throughout the year, including House football, hockey and handball matches, as well as swimming galas and annual sports days for each Key Stage.
A number of sports clubs are run, both within school and as part of the school community. These include hockey, basketball, gymnastics and football.
