Mathematics equips children with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and influence the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and the ability to think in abstract ways. An understanding of mathematics is vital in everyday life and essential in many areas of employment.

Many different cultures have contributed to the development and application of mathematics. Today, the subject transcends cultural boundaries and forms a shared language for international communication and understanding. Mathematics is a creative discipline: stimulating children to develop a variety of solutions and to understand connections between different ideas.

Learning in Mathematics
Mathematics at Key Stage 1

Children develop their knowledge and understanding of mathematics through practical activity, exploration and discussion. They learn to count, read and write numbers to 100 and beyond. They develop a range of mental calculation skills and use these confidently in different settings and learn about shape, space and data handling through practical activities. Children begin to use mathematical language when talking about their methods and to explain their reasoning when solving problems.
