Learning in Geography
Geography raises and answers questions about the natural and human worlds. It develops knowledge of places and environments throughout the world, an understanding of maps, and a range of investigative and problem-solving skills both inside and outside the classroom. Geography is a focus for understanding issues about the environment and sustainable development.

As children study geography, they encounter different societies and cultures, helping them to develop understanding of how nations rely on each other. Geography can inspire children to think about their own place in the world, their values, and their rights and responsibilities towards other people and the environment.

Geography at Key Stage 1

Children investigate their local area and a contrasting area, finding out about the environment in both places and the people who live there. They carry out enquiry inside and outside the classroom, recording their observations in various ways and learning to ask appropriate questions and use geographical vocabulary and resources such as maps, plans and photographs.

Geography at Key Stage 2

Children build on their previous learning, investigating a variety of people, places and environments and starting to make links between different places around the world. They find out how the actions of people impact on the environment and how, in turn, people’s lives are shaped by the environment in which they live. Children learn from direct experience, using trips and fieldwork, and from classroom-based research, making use of a range of maps, plans, aerial photographs, books and ICT.
