Learning in English continued
Our planning and teaching takes account of the wide variety of experience and ability that children show in developing literacy skills. Children are grouped for shared reading and writing activities so that their learning can be directed at a level appropriate to the individual. Children who have English as an additional language, or who are new to formal literacy learning, are supported, where appropriate, by our Individual Needs Department. Children demonstrating high ability in the subject are identified and appropriately challenged.
All children take home reading books, at the appropriate level, for regular practice and enjoyment. In addition to class-based reading books, all children visit the library weekly to choose from our extensive range of fiction, non-fiction and taped books.
Children’s learning in English is continually assessed, as the result of regular reading and writing activities, with areas for development identified by the class teacher. Children in Years 2 to 6 also take British standardised tests (SATs and OATs) to monitor progress at the end of each year. Additional assessment takes place at the beginning of Year 2 to ensure that every child is developing an appropriate level of confidence in reading and writing. A home/school literacy programme is offered to those children who would benefit at this critical stage of literacy learning.
